Welsh Songfest planned

A long-running tradition will take place once again this year.

The Welsh Songfest is set for 1 p.m. March 1 at First United Methodist Church, 124 West Broad St. in Tamaqua.The Welsh Songfest, also known as the "Gymanfa Ganu," is a festival of songs usually sung featuring four-part harmony.The songs are sung by a choir with audience participation. The choir typically consists of volunteers from area churches.Those expected to be represented at the March event are: First United Methodist Church, St John's Lutheran, Trinity United Church of Christ, New Life Assembly of God, Pope John XXIII, all of Tamaqua; United Methodist and First Congregational, both of Coaldale; St. Peter's Church, Mantzville; Zion Stone Church in New Ringgold, St John's Lutheran, Lansford; St Joseph's Roman Catholic Church, Summit Hill; and St. Patrick's Roman Catholic Church and Trinity Lutheran, both of Pottsville.Soloist will be Megan Prock, Pottsville, and a four-piece ensemble will be featured.Audrey Christ will be the organist and pianist, and Bob Ames will serve as director.There will be a Welsh tea, "Te Bach," following the Songfest."The purpose is to promote Welsh Heritage, since the Welsh are known for their beautiful music and their love of singing," said Marilyn Price Felsoci, event organizer.Felsoci said area residents are urged to mark their calendars for the event. All are welcome.
