Weissport raises concerns over homeless

Several members of Weissport Borough Council said there are three or four homeless people living along the flood levee under the Bridge Street bridge.

What especially concerns the council members is that those residents have an area where they relieve themselves. The council members said there could be pollution problems caused in the Lehigh River because of their habits.Council President Gene Kershner said some of the individuals "have lived there for years.""It's going to be a crisis dealing with the sanitation problem," he said.Council member Brenda Leiby asked, "What can we do about that? If they have nowhere to go, what do you do?"The council said they will discuss the matter with their police officer.Leiby said the residents are at a location which is out of sight."Nobody knows they're down there," she said.In other business, Leiby stressed that some work soon has to be done at the borough hall, especially to the women's lavatory. She said the ceiling is falling down in the restroom.Councilman Arland Moyer said there are holes in the perimeter of the roof which are allowing squirrels to get into the ceiling area. He said the squirrels could be causing the problem.Leiby said if the problem isn't addressed, there soon will be water leaking in the roof which, in turn, could cause structural problems. The council agreed to have three contractors assess the situation and provide cost estimates for making repairs. In another matter, Moyer said the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection has inspected the flood levee and has two areas of concern. One area is beneath the Route 209 bridge where no vegetation exists. The council said the bridge keeps that spot from getting rain, so erosion is a concern. The other area is between the Bridge Street bridge and the railroad trestle where DEP said concrete patching is needed.Kershner said this area of the levee was built in the 1920s.Moyer said the borough should contact the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers about this problem. "We can't afford to do all the concrete patching," he said. "To keep patching all the concrete would take forever. It's more than we can handle."The council said it will contact its police officer regarding two youngsters riding mini bikes in a reckless manner around the town.Kershner said the children shoot across the streets without watching for cars."There's no safety involved," he said.
