A Palmerton man was sentenced to a Carbon County prison term on Monday after pleading guilty to fleeing or attempting to elude police, a felony three.

David Francis Canham, 36, also pleaded to driving under suspension-DUI related before President Judge Roger N. Nanovic II.Canham was involved in an incident on May 28, 2016, that started along Franklin Avenue when Palmerton police attempted to stop him because they knew his license was under suspension. Canham sped away at a high rate of speedonto Route 248.The chase continued into Lehigh Township, Northampton County and onto Route 145 with speeds reaching 90 mph on Route 248 and increasing to 100 mph on Route 145, police said. He also hit two other vehicles during the pursuit on 145, police said. Police broke off the chase on Route 145 for safety reasons.However, a short time later police found Canham’s vehicle off Route 145 next to a tree. As police approached he fled again. He later abandoned the vehicle and ran into nearby woods. Some time later he came out of the woods and surrendered.Canham told Nanovic, “I understand what I did was wrong. My family is suffering because I can’t work.”Canham has been in the county prison since the incident.Nanovic sentenced him to serve three to 18 months in prison on the fleeing charge and 90 days in jail on the suspension count with the terms running concurrently.He was also ordered to pay fines of $2,000, get a drug and alcohol evaluation and follow all recommendations for treatment, zero tolerance for drug and alcohol use, supply a DNA sample, pay court costs of about $1,000 and pay a $50 per month supervision fee.Canham has been held on probation violation so he was not due any credit on the jail term, which began immediately. He also previously pleaded to one count of possession of drug paraphernalia. Nanovic placed him on probation for a year on that charge, consecutive to the other charges.
