The Lawrence B. Morris school in Jim Thorpe and the Penn-Kidder Campus in Albrightsville conclude the pre-kindergarten summer program.

The program usually takes place at the same time as the other summer enrichment programs for kids kindergarten to eighth grade.The program is 8 a.m. to noon Monday through Thursday. This is the last week of the program for the summer."It helps the kids get acclimated to the environment," said Jaime Kunkel, who has been with the program for almost 15 years and is a teacher at L.B. Morris.When the program began, it was designed for at-risk students entering kindergarten, funded by title 1 programs. Now the program has expanded to include any students entering kindergarten."It's rewarding, seeing even in four days how much they grow and learn, and their excitement for starting school," says Sherri Schafer, another teacher at L.B. Morris who has been with the program since it's beginning 20 years ago.Parents sign the kids up for one week, where they will learn the basics of colors, shapes, reading and numbers.The kids also now learn songs, the Pledge of Allegiance, and the days of the week.A snack is included during the day. Time is also spent outside and in the computer lab."The kids are all over, in the music room, library, gym," Kunkel said. This way, the kids get used to where everything is located in the school."One day was "Shape of the day" where the shape of the day is the circle, so during music time the kids play drums, a color game, "The Wheels on the Bus" is learned, and there is also a number book.Tommy Schafer, 7, did the program before he entered kindergarten, and said it was "fun" and that it "helped a lot, learning to be nice and getting around the school."
