Carbon County is doing an inspection of the correctional facility’s aging roof to see what type of project needs to be completed.
On Thursday, the board of commissioners approved a proposal from TREMCO Roofing and Building Maintenance of Beachwood, Ohio, to conduct a nuclear scan of the prison roof at a cost of $3,867.
Commissioners’ Chairman Wayne Nothstein said that the scan will provide the county with a picture of where the deteriorated spots on the roof are and if it needs to be completely replaced or if it can be patched and resurfaced.
“If 30% of the insulation is bad, then we have to replace the whole roof,” Nothstein said, adding that the scan will take place within the next two weeks.
Commissioner Rocky Ahner said that the scan will be done in 10-foot-square grid blocks and would provide a clear picture of the scope of the project.
To do a complete replacement of the prison roof, it would cost the county approximately $1.9 million, while a roof restoration, which is repairing the problem areas and resurfacing the roof, would cost roughly $850,000.
Commissioner Chris Lukasevich pointed out that in the 2021 spending plan, the county has already set aside funds for this project.
