COVID-19 safety protocols in place

I would like to reassure the author of “Please wear a mask” (Voices from across our area, Nov. 28, 2020) that all people involved followed safe COVID-19 procedures for the photograph of Lydia Wallace signing her letter of intent to continue her education and athletics at Rider University. Upon entering the building, all people are screened and masks are required. Masks were worn the entire time as we prepared for the photograph, her interview and afterward.

For the photograph, all masked participants were positioned with the family together in the front and the three school officials 3 feet away from the family and apart away from each other. Several photographs were made with the press of a finger.

For the second image that appeared in the paper, masks were removed, we did not exhale, and within three seconds the second photo was taken. Masks were immediately returned to covering our faces.

I believe most people will agree that this was an acceptable mask removal that celebrated, as the author stated, “the joyous occasion of exceptional student-athlete Lydia Wallace, signing a letter of intent with a prestigious Division 1 University.” Lydia Wallace and her family deserved this proper recognition.

This photograph marks an important accomplishment in Lydia Wallace’s life and becomes part of her history. It recognized her years of sacrifice, dedication, hard work and success as a student and an athlete.

We must find safe ways to recognize achievement and celebrate success during these very dark days of the pandemic that will continue well into 2021. In a world where everyone points a finger to blame, please learn the facts before finding fault. Thank you.

Sincerely,

Thomas Lesisko
