COVID-19 case reported at Schuylkill prison

Schuylkill County President Judge William E. Baldwin said there is a case of COVID-19 at the Schuylkill County Prison.

“I’m aware of one case at the prison,” Baldwin, who is chairman of the prison board, said Wednesday.

He said the inmate is in isolation and is not exhibiting any symptoms to his knowledge.

“They are in there for 14 days. We check their temperature twice a day,” Baldwin said.

He said Warden David Wapinsky told him of the news earlier this week. Baldwin would not disclose additional information on the inmate. Wapinsky did not return a call for comment.

This is the first case of the virus in the prison.

“We have been very lucky so far,” Baldwin said of not having confirmed cases.

Visitation of inmates has not been permitted since the start of the pandemic, Baldwin said. He said the virus is very contagious and everyone needs in the county needs to remain vigilant.

Numerous county employees have tested positive for the virus. The county has taken steps to combat the spread at county buildings.
