A look back: Dec. 1, 1961

The reported highway kill for the Northeast Division of the Pennsylvania Game Commission for October and November will definitely affect hunting in the area after the district’s game protectors reported approximately 600 deer have been killed on roadways during the two-month period. The total includes 225 male deer, officials said.

October and November are the main breeding months for deer, reaching the highest point about mid-November, protectors said. During this period, deer are seen along highways more than any other time of the year.

Roy Trexler, supervisor for the Game Commission, said deer crossing signs have been erected along highways to alert motorists of the frequent instances of deer in the roadways.
