One person was injured in a rear-end collision of a pickup and sport utility vehicle that occurred at 3:43 p.m. Thursday along Route 443 (Clamtown Road) in Walker Township, south of Tamaqua.
State police at Frackville said Ronald R. Derr, 63, of New Ringgold, was driving a 2001 Chevrolet Tracker eastbound and approaching the intersection with Wildcat Road. Troopers said Derr intended to turn left onto Wildcat Road but an approaching train had triggered the crossing gate arms across the road. John R. Gall, 78, of New Ringgold, driving a 1997 Chevrolet Silverado, was also eastbound and attempted to slow down, swerved to the right to avoid the Tracker which suddenly stopped in front of him. The front left corner of the Silverado clipped the rear right corner of the Tracker.After impact the Silverado left the road and traveled down an embankment. Derr complained of neck pain and was transported to St. Luke's Hospital-Miners Campus in Coaldale. Gall and Derr's passenger, Gloria J. Derr, 60, were not injured. Both vehicles had to be towed from the scene.Troopers cited Derr for a turn signal violation. Assisting troopers were volunteers from the East End Fire Company, Tamaqua, and New England Fire Company. West Penn Township police also assisted.
