Borough signs contract for CARES funds

At least one municipality has signed a contract after being approved for CARES Act money in Schuylkill County.

Douglas Litwhiler, a Ringtown borough council member, said Friday borough council President Leonard Kamarousky signed a contract recently for $35,000.

“It’s a big help to us, “ Litwhiler said.

He said County Administrator Gary Bender said the check should be forthcoming soon.

He appreciates the money that will used to expand the borough building to accommodate for social distancing. Money distributed from the program must be spent by Dec. 31.

The borough building, an approximate 14-by-24-foot structure, is located at 31 S. Center St., Ringtown. Litwhiler said it is very small. An approximate 36-by-65-foot pole building is planned for the site that will house the secretary’s office and a meeting room for council. The police department will use the existing room for its headquarters, Litwhiler said.

County Finance Director Paul Buber said earlier this week 24 nonprofits, 30 small businesses and 21 municipalities are receiving funds. However, two or three applicants who submitted applications before the initial deadline could potentially receive funds once all documentation is forthcoming.

The county received $12.6 million from the federal government. A large percentage of the money went for county related projects.
