Lehighton man gets state prison term for drugs, DUI

A Lehighton man was sentenced to a state prison term after previously pleading guilty to drug charges, theft and driving under the influence.

Michael Steven Cardone, 30, was sentenced by Joseph J. Matika to serve a total of 12 to 60 months in a state correctional institution on charges of possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, retail theft, false identification to law enforcement, driving under the influence and driving under suspension-DUI related.He was arrested on the retail theft count on July 20, 2015, at Boyer's Market in Lansford. He was arrested on the drug charges on Sept. 3, 2015, by Mahoning Township police following a traffic stop in the 300 block of Mauch Chunk Street; and on the other drug counts by Palmerton police on Nov. 22, 2015, in the area of 146 Delaware Ave.The DUI occurred on Sept. 9, 2015, along Route 209 in Franklin Township by state police at Lehighton. A blood test showed the presence of a controlled substance.Cardone admitted to an addiction problem that led to his crimes. He currently has a detainer filed against him by Lehigh County and is an inmate in the state correctional institution at Camp Hill on other charges.On the DUI count he was ordered to pay a fine of $1,500 and license suspended for 18 months. On the suspension sentence he was ordered to pay a fine of $1,000 and on the paraphernalia charge a $200 fine.He was also ordered to get a drug and alcohol evaluation, render 100 hours of community service when released on parole, supply a DNA sample, stay out of Boyer's in Lansford, and pay court costs of about $1,000.He was given credit for 27 days spent in prison on the charges.
