Carbon man admits to trespass count
A Carbon County man entered a guilty plea to a criminal trespass count on Tuesday in the county court before Judge Joseph J. Matika and was sentenced to a prison term.
Joseph R. Becker, 32, of Summit Hill, pleaded to the charge after admitting he entered a home at 313 W. Water St. in Lansford on Feb. 27.In a plea bargain with the district attorney's office, a charge of robbery was dropped.Borough police said Becker entered the home looking for drugs along with another man, later identified as Brian R. Kehl, 31, of Summit Hill. They said they were looking for a person named "Cody" and said he owed them money. While in the home the two restrained a 16-year-old boy who was in the home. Kehl held the boy while Becker searched the house. After a short time, Kehl let the boy go to help Becker. The boy ran to an adjoining home and told his grandfather, Dave Knittle, what was going on. Knittle then went to the home armed with a 9 mm handgun and confronted Kehl and Becker. The two men then fled the home. At the time of the incident Knittle said, "I didn't do anything any other grandfather wouldn't have done."Becker told Matika, "I'm sorry for what I did. I just want to end this chapter of my life."He said his use of drugs caused his actions in this case and another incident which previously went through the court system.Matika sentenced him to serve 165 days to one day less two years in the county prison and gave him credit for 165 days already served and immediately paroled him.Becker was also ordered to render 50 hours of community service, supply a DNA sample, have no contact with any of the victims, get a drug and alcohol evaluation and follow any recommendation for treatment, zero tolerance imposed on D&A use, and pay court costs of about $1,000.Kehl, 31, previously pleaded guilty before Matika to one count of criminal trespass, a felony three. He was sentenced to serve four to 23 months in the county prison.
