Schuylkill commissioners OK change orders

Schuylkill County commissioners on Wednesday approved another $2,962 in change orders for a former beauty school being renovated to house the Children and Youth Services agency.

The changes are for Miller Bros. Construction to install interior signage and plaques for $585; to fabricate, paint, install metal strips under stair stringers for $932; to grind about ¼ of an inch of a concrete high spot in the kitchen area for $595; and to pressure wash the lower front of the building for $445.In May 2013, commissioners acquired the 21,000-square-foot building and two adjacent lots in Pottsville for $740,000 from brothers Dale and Franklin Schoeneman.Commissioners In October 2012 floated a $21 million bond issue to fund building projects; $2.6 million of that was earmarked to buy and renovate the 324 N. Centre St. building.The county will be reimbursed for $500,000 of the cost of the project through a government grant.In other matters, commissioners approved the "county certification of funds" form for the Farmland Preservation program.The form is required to be completed and signed by the commissioners each year to confirm the amount of funds being allocated for easement purchases.This year, the amount is $50,876, said Andrea Geist of the Schuylkill Conservation District.The form must be signed and submitted to the state by Jan. 31.Commissioners also appointed Howard Merrick Jr. of Pottsville, Republican, to a five-year term on the Schuylkill County Municipal Authority. His term runs from Jan. 1 through Dec. 31, 2020.Commissioner Gary J. Hess voted no.They also appointed Edward M. Kleha of Shenandoah, a Democrat, to a five-year term on the Schuylkill County Housing Authority. His term also runs from Jan. 1 through Dec. 31, 2020.
