Summit Hill man doesn't like to talk about Vietnam
There are some things Joseph "Mucker" Williams doesn't like to talk about.
His time in the Vietnam War is one of them. But his eyes tell a story of hard-fought battles and a gentle, caring heart. The 65-year-old Summit Hill resident served as a sergeant in the United States Army from 1968 to 1971.During his deployment to Vietnam in May 1970, when he was serving in the 191st Military Intelligence Company, 1st Cavalry Division, Williams sacrificed his safety to help civilians critically wounded by terrorist attacks in TanBinh, Phu Giao, Binh Duong, Republic of Vietnam. For this heroic act, Williams was awarded the Bronze Star medal, the fourth-highest award given to military personnel who showed bravery, heroism or meritorious service in the face of danger against an enemy.Williams, who felt it was best not to speak on record, provided a previously published article about the events that unfolded that day.According to the article, Williams and SP5 James Watts, were en route from Bien Hoa to the 1st Cavalry Division Headquarters in Phuoc Vinh when they stopped to investigate a small gathering of civilians alongside the road. They observed three Vietnamese children lying approximately 100 yards from the road. One was dead while the other two were critically injured after an explosive that had been implanted in the area detonated.Vietnamese national police warned Williams and Watts that the site might contain more mines, but the pair chose to sacrifice their safety for the lives of the two injured youth."Immediately, (they) entered the area and attempted to aid both individuals," the article continues. "While Sgt. Williams continued to apply first aid, SP5 Watts stopped a passing vehicle and requested immediate assistance from medevac facilities in the area."Williams and Watts stayed with the wounded and attempted to try to prevent them from succumbing to shock until the medical helicopter arrived. The pair was later presented with the Bronze Star for their "immediate reaction to a serious situation."Williams is the son of the late Stella and Earl Williams of Rickert's Grove and the father of three daughters, Kim, Joanne and Samantha, and a son, Brian.BoxName: Joseph "Mucker" WilliamsAge: 65Hometown: Summit HillMilitary branch: United States ArmyRank: SergeantYears of service: 1968-1971Medals: Bronze Star Medal
