Weatherly students honored for their achievements
The March Weatherly School Board meeting was all about recognizing students.
Beginning with February's student of the month recognition, Elementary/Middle School Principal Sandra Slavick called seventh-grader Eric Walsh to the podium."He is a member of the middle school chorus, Spark, and is the homeroom representative for his grade."The second student called was eighth-grader Girard Fewins."Girard is an honor student, a member of Spark and the photography club," she said.Senior of the Month Alexis Hartz is the president of the Class of 2016, captain of the volleyball and girls' basketball teams, and is the president of the Weatherly Area High School chapter of the National Honor Society.Alexis volunteered with Relay for Life and the annual Dig Pink Volleyball game. She currently works for Whitewater Challengers.High school student Jillian Bartel was recognized by the board for her recent win of Miss Greater Hazleton Outstanding Teen for 2016.The mission of the organization is to provide a positive mentoring experience for young women and give them opportunities to earn scholarship to further their education.Bartel worked with Building for America's Bravest, a nonprofit organization that builds homes for American veterans. Bartel is working to organize a 5K run/walk for the cause. "I want to get the community involved," she said.The ninth and tenth grade math and engineering team won first place at Bucknell University in theTests of Engineering Aptitude, Mathematics and Science on Feb. 22.In addition to having to answer questions, the team had to write essays and participate in a design challenge. The team received certificates during the board meeting. The team consisted of freshmen Nicholas Berger, Jeremy Moser and Nikki Polivka, along with sophomores Jesse Gehmen, Marie Gunderman, Joel Hinkle and Samantha Knepper.Jasmine Montalvo won the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board Alcohol Poster Contest, taking home $100. Her design will be made into banners and posters to be circulated around the state.Montalvo will be honored for her win at the State Museum of Pennsylvania on April 5.A new poster contest is taking over the school, this time regarding teen dating. Louise Keller of the Domestic Violence Service Center came to the school to speak about red flags of teen dating. She offered students the opportunity to participate in the project about safe dating. The winner of the contest will receive a $1,000 scholarship.
