Banned Books Week

Banned Books Week celebrates everyone’s freedom to read.

Stop by the Palmerton Area Library this week to see the front window display featuring a list of frequently challenged or banned books. Go inside and browse for books and see if you can spot a “shelf talker” that gives information on attempts to ban a particular book.

Jerusalem Evangelical Lutheran Church

Jerusalem Evangelical Lutheran Church, Trachsville, will continue to hold worship services in the church picnic grove. Services are held at 10:15 a.m.

Services will be held outside as long as possible, weather permitting. In case it rains the day or night before, services will be held in the church parking lot. In the case of rain the day of, services will be canceled.

Any changes or updates will be posted on Facebook.

Takeout meal

Jerusalem Evangelical Lutheran Church, Trachsville, will be having a takeout meal on Oct. 28 from 4-6 p.m. The meal is pork and sauerkraut with mashed potatoes, applesauce, a roll and butter, and rice or tapioca pudding for dessert.

Preorders are preferred by Oct. 21.

Parryville trick or treat

Parryville is holding trick or treat night from 6-8 p.m. Oct. 31.

The Fire Department will be handing out hot dogs, drinks and candy to the children. Wear masks, take care and try to observe social distancing.

Holy Trinity Lutheran Church

Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 502 Lafayette Ave., Palmerton, will hold worship on Sunday in the sanctuary at 10:15 a.m. If you wish to attend, please call 610-826-2524, so the number can be noted because of limited capacity. Join in the fun of celebrating sports.

You are invited to come to church this Sunday decked out in your favorite teams colors and logos, jerseys, T-shirts, scarves, and whatever else you might choose to wear or bring.

If you are unable to attend in person, the service is available on Zoom.

Bible study is held on Thursdays at 10:30 a.m. in the fellowship hall.

‘Thriller’ flash mob

Karissa Bollinger in conjunction with Spillane’s fitness is looking for Palmerton residents to learn the Michael Jackson “Thriller” choreography via Zoom or in person at Spillane’s to get ready for the main event. There are four classes. Your fee to participate includes the lessons and a T-shirt. Sign up at Spillane’s.

The event is for all ages and will be held on Oct. 30 at 5:30 p.m. The “Zombie Dancers” will be lined up on Delaware Avenue and social distancing will be observed. Sign up ASAP to be involved in the classes.

Used book sale

Palmerton Kids for the Community will be hosting a used book sale at the Little Bombers Daycare and Learning Center, 180 Delaware Ave.

The sale will be held Oct. 16 from 5-7 p.m., and Oct. 17 and 18 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. It will be held on the sidewalk in front of the day care.

All proceeds will be donated to Raising the House.

Collecting shoes

St. John Neumann Regional School is seeking donations of gently worn, used and new shoes. They are in their final two weeks of collecting and donations will be accepted until Oct. 14.

Donation boxes are located at the Palmerton and Slatington campuses, the Sacred Heart Church in Palmerton, and the Palmerton Library.

In-service day

Schools in the Palmerton Area School District will be closed on Oct. 12 for a teacher in-service day.

Jerusalem UCC

Come worship at Jerusalem United Church of Christ, Trachsville, in the church grove at 10:30 a.m. each Sunday. Bring your lawn chair and face masks. You can also remain in your car and listen to the service on 95.5 FM. The service will also be live on Facebook.

For those who are unable or do not wish to attend the service, it will be recorded for later viewing on the JUCC website. In case of inclement weather, the service will be held in the sanctuary. You can remain in your car for this service as well.

Because of the time change of the worship service, Sunday school will meet on Zoom at 9:30 a.m.

St. John’s UCC

St. John’s UCC, 891 Columbia Ave. Palmerton, will host its first takeout community meal from 4:30-6 p.m. on Oct. 13.

Those coming for a meal should park in the lot, come to the door and someone will take your order. The meal will be Salisbury steak, buttered noodles, green bean casserole, rolls and a choice of chocolate or vanilla cake.
