Man sentenced for minor corruption
A Carbon County man was given a time-served prison sentence on Thursday in the county court after previously admitting to having a sexual relationship with a teenage female.
Timothy Mark Andrews, 29, of Beaver Meadows, was sentenced by Judge Joseph J. Matika to 150 days to one year in prison on a corruption of a minor in a sexual manner charge, a felony three. The district attorney's office dropped more serious charges of indecent assault on a person less than 16, statutory sexual assault, felony one and two, respectively, and indecent assault, a misdemeanor two.State police at Hazleton charged that Andrews had a sexual relationship with a then 15-year-old female over a two-year period of Dec. 1, 2010, to Jan. 1, 2012.During that relationship Andrews gave the female alcohol and drugs, including the date rape drug ecstasy. He admitted having sexual intercourse with the girl during the time frame. The girl reported the relationship to police while she was being interviewed concerning another case.Troopers said Andrews was 24 at the time.Matika said that even though the victim said the relationship was consensual, she was underage at the time and such a relationship is illegal.Andrews did not make a statement to the court, but did send a letter to Matika concerning the incident.Matika said Andrews was a good person with a good reputation who made a bad choice. Matika said, "A bad one, probably the most bad choice in your life." He added, "I think you paid the price for that bad choice."In addition to the prison term, Andrews was ordered to get a drug and alcohol evaluation and follow any recommendations for treatment, render 50 hours of community service, supply a DNA sample, pay court costs and pay a $50 per month supervision fee.Because the charges fall under the provisions of Megan's Law, Andrews must register for the next 15 years as a sexual offender and follow all other conditions imposed by the law.An evaluation by the state sexual offenders assessment board determined that Andrews was not a sexual violent predator, which would have meant a lifetime registration, if it found otherwise.
