BARC yard sale benefits community

Bowmanstown Area Residents Connected held its yearly community yard sale Saturday to benefit their organization as well as the people in the community.

The community event took place at over 40 addresses all throughout the Bowmanstown area.

Participants were asked to provide a $5 donation to have their address put on a map of the yard sale locations and to have Green Drop take any unwanted items after the sale was over. By partnering with Green Drop, unsold items were donated to benefit the Military Order of the Purple Heart.

BARC President Kara Scott explained the importance of the event saying, “It’s a full circle thing. It gives back on every level. People can get rid of their things, make a few bucks and then whatever is left they can donate to the MOPH.”

Heather and her husband, Justin McNaughton, attended the event as well with their business McNaughton Adventures. In business for three years now, the couple creates homemade home decor with Justin handling the woodworking aspect and Heather painting the designs.

Although the two are based in Perry County, Pennsylvania, they often visit the area since Heather graduated from Northern Lehigh and her brother is a volunteer at the Bowmanstown Fire Company. The next event McNaughton Adventures will be selling at will be the Leesport Farmers Market from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. For more information on their business or to see photos of their work, visit their Facebook and Instagram pages by searching “McNaughton Adventures.”

In addition to the yard sales, Scott also said tickets were being sold to win a bench as well as Gertrude Hawk candy bar sales at select houses. The money from these sales will go toward BARC to match grants to put in a community park as well as fund future community events.

“What we want to do is bring the community together and create a strong, cohesive community. That is our goal. We want the neighborhood residents to know each other and we want our community to be safe and some place people want to live and raise their children,” she said.

In regard to future events, Scott said BARC will be holding a community dog show on Oct. 24 at 11 a.m. at the Oliver Solt pavilion near the Bowmanstown Volunteer Fire Company. The show will include 10 categories including “Best Dressed” and “Best Tricks,” and afterward participants have the option to have their dogs blessed by the local church.
