Coaldale Borough has settled an old lawsuit stemming from 2012, when council laid off three full-time police officers.

Council voted Tuesday night to approve a settlement agreement in the case.Officers Charles Blesse, Keith Krapf and Todd Weiss sued the borough in 2013 after they were let go from their full-time positions.The three officers have since been reinstated, and Krapf now serves as the borough's police chief.According to the settlement, Blesse, Krapf and Weiss will receive a total of $10,000 in exchange for dropping their claim against the borough. They will also receive one year's worth of vacation and sick time.Council approved the settlement agreement 4-0 with Mike Doerr and Tom Keerans absent, and Angela Krapf, the wife of Keith Krapf, abstaining.The case had been initially decided in favor of the borough. But an appeals court ordered a judge in Schuylkill County to rehear the case last year.In their 2013 lawsuit, the officers challenged the borough's stance that it could not afford the full-time officers.At the time, the borough filled their shifts with part-time officers and state police coverage.But several people testified that the then-mayor and members of council wanted to remove Keith Krapf, against whom they held a grudge.The grudge against Krapf reportedly stemmed from the fact that he arrested the mayor, Richard Corkery, before he held office, and later reported councilman David J. Yelito to the Attorney General's Office for holding a seat on council despite being a felon.The department's then-chief, Timothy Delaney, and a part-time officer both testified that Yelito and Corkery were attempting to single out Krapf.The Schuylkill County District Attorney sued to have Yelito removed from his seat in 2013 because of his past felony conviction.Corkery was since sentenced to three years in state prison for viewing child pornography.
