A Summit Hill woman has been charged with assaulting her newborn child.

According to Summit Hill Police Chief Joseph Fittos, officers were dispatched to St. Luke's Hospital-Miners Campus in Coaldale on June 1 after hospital officials reported a suspected child abuse case in the emergency room.An investigation determined that Ashley Orach, 28, of 10 S. Pine St., had assaulted her 5-week-old child.She was charged with three counts aggravated assault, recklessly endangering children, simple assault and harassment.Following treatment at the hospital, Carbon County Children and Youth intervened.Orach is free on unsecured bail.
