A Schuylkill County man pleaded guilty in Carbon County court on Monday to theft incidents.

He was one of three defendants in pending criminal cases to enter a guilty plea before Judge Joseph J. Matika.Two theftsWilliam Joseph Wassel, 42, of Port Carbon, pleaded to one count each of theft and retail theft in separate incidents.The theft incident occurred on Oct. 12, 2016, at Boyer's Market, 500 W. Bertsch St., Lansford. Wassel took a dog that was tied up outside the store and left there by a woman who had gone into the store to purchase something. Video surveillance identified Wassel taking the dog and getting into a vehicle which headed toward Coaldale. He was later found and charged, and the dog was recovered.The retail theft occurred on Nov. 11, 2016, at the Walmart store in Mahoning Township where he took items valued at over $800. There is a co-defendant in the case.On the retail theft count Matika placed Wassel on probation for 18 months and one year probation on the theft charge with the terms running concurrently. He also ordered Wassel to render 75 hours of community service, make restitution to Walmart for $889.32 and stay out of the store.Other pleasAlexander Joseph Modawar, 36, of Lansford, pleaded to one count of retail theft. He was charged by Lansford police for an incident at the Rite Aid Store, West Bertsch Street, where he took various items including a flash card, computer mouse and card reader.Modawar has a history of theft incidents and mental health issues. He is currently an inmate in the county prison on probation violation charges.Matika sentenced him to serve six to one day less 24 months in prison, make restitution of $73.97 to Rite Aid, get both drug and alcohol and mental health evaluations, supply a DNA sample and stay out of the store. He was given credit for 209 days served on the charge. However, he will not be released because of the probation violation.Robert Alan Fox, 60, of Quakertown, Bucks County, pleaded to one count of retail theft, as a summary offense. He was arrested by Mahoning Township police for an incident at the Walmart store on March 6, 2015. He fled the store with a co-defendant and was stopped by township police near the store. In a plea bargain, a charge of driving under the influence was dropped.Matika imposed a fine of $200 and ordered restitution to Walmart for $44.84.Each defendant sentenced must also pay court costs of about $1,000 and a $50 per month supervision fee while on probation or parole.
