Some Carbon County government offices could be temporarily moving into the Jim Thorpe School District administration building.
Carbon County is seeking a temporary home for several departments located in a building that is currently slated for renovation. The county, earlier this month, approved hiring Person Agency of Lehighton to complete a rental feel appraisal for two office locations in Jim Thorpe.
The two sides have been negotiating a lease for space inside the district offices, located on Center Avenue in the borough, not far from the county courthouse.
The Jim Thorpe Area school board approved the lease at their meeting last week.
The district is prepared to offer three rooms inside the building as requested by the county commissioners.
The district’s proposed lease would run through the end of the school district’s fiscal year, June 30, 2021, with an option for the county to rent month-to-month after that.
Superintendent John Rushefski said the district will await the county’s approval.
“We put together the lease. They have to make the decision whether they’re going to approve it,” he said.
Commissioners’ Chairman Wayne Nothstein said the lease is still under negotiation.
“We’re just going to look at the agreement, and no decision has been made yet for sure,” he said.
Jim Thorpe board members Cindy Lesisko-Henning and Paul Montemuro voted against approving the proposed lease. Henning said she believes the district should sell the administration building.
“We do not need this building. This just makes us have to hold onto it longer,” she said.
