Victim's family grappling with death
The news of Jason "Jay" Hahn's death stunned family and friends, many of whom had been searching for the victim and hoping for positive results.
Hahn's body was discovered about 5 p.m. Saturday in a wooded area near Silver Creek Road in Blythe Township, near New Philadelphia, 10 miles southwest of Tamaqua. He was last seen June 14, when he left the house with a friend.According to Pennsylvania State Police, Frackville Barracks, the discovery of the body by ATV riders, has led to charges filed against Ethan Sullivan, 20Hahn's older brother, Harry, 28, said Sunday the family is taking the news hard, especially Hahn's mother, who has medical issues."She's a wreck," he said.Members of the Snyder family are lending support to the Hahns even as they, themselves, try to get their heads around the tragedy."My mom was with his family all night," said Snyder, who said he's known the victim for the past eight years. In fact, Hahn was staying with the Snyder family at the time of his disappearance and had lived there about one year. Those who knew Hahn said there was no reason for anyone to want to harm him."None of this makes sense," said Derek Snyder of Andreas, when contacted Sunday. Hahn is described as a peaceful type, "very laid back," Snyder said.Snyder said the accused murderer was a friend of Hahn's. Snyder knew Sullivan, too, but not too well, he said."I knew him for about a year. I never thought he'd do something like this," said Snyder.Snyder said Sullivan picked Hahn up late June 14, and there was no reason to suspect anything was wrong."I thought maybe they'd go off-roading with the Jeep."But when Hahn never called or returned home, the Snyder and Hahn families became concerned.Snyder said Sullivan picked up Hahn in an older-style Jeep, possibly a CRV model, details that became important once the search for Hahn was underway.Hahn carried a cellphone and was very dependable about using it, said Snyder, adding "he would always stay in touch."But Hahn never returned home and never called. Snyder discovered that Hahn's cell phone had been turned off the day after he went missing.Snyder went to police but reportedly was told there was little they could do since Hahn was an adult who'd left of his own free will.Concern grew when Snyder found out that Sullivan was in jail and "apparently he had stolen the Jeep and had picked up Jay in a stolen Jeep."Snyder said Sullivan claimed he'd dropped Hahn off near the village of Mary D or New Philadelphia and that "his story kept changing."Family and friends immediately began circulating posters of Hahn in the communities between Tamaqua and Pottsville.Sullivan is currently being held at the Schuylkill County Prison.Among the charges lodged against him are criminal homicide, aggravated assault, robbery, simple assault, theft by unlawful taking and recklessly endangering another person.Police have not issued details of a possible motive.Hahn grew up in Tamaqua and was a 2012 graduate of Tamaqua Area High School.
