Art exhibit

The Tamaqua Community Art Center will host an exhibit of the work done by artist Dena Due this Thursday.A meet and greet will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the art center, 125 Pine St.Due's work illustrates the macabre and surreal, twisting life's emotional moments into visual characters. She uses bold line work and a mix of colors, while often adding mixed media to her creations. She dabbles in acrylic painting, burnishing with color pencils, paper cutting and sculpture with polymer clay.A graduate of the University of Arts in Philadelphia and the Columbus College of Art and Design, Due holds an associate in liberal arts degree and has been creating visual art and music in the Lehigh Valley.Following Thursday's meet and greet, her work will continue to be displayed at the art center through Sept. 25.Final concertThe Tamaqua Area Chamber of Commerce will wrap up its 10th annual free summer concert series on Thursdaywith an evening of classic rock by Diaspora.The concert will held from 6-8 p.m. on the platform of the historic Tamaqua Train Station.Anyone planning to attend is welcome to bring a lawn chair or make a reservation at the new Tamaqua Station Restaurant.The concert will be held weather permitting.Soup socialThe next monthly community soup social at Trinity United Church of Christ will be held Saturday. The social will be held from 4-6 p.m. in the social hall.The meal is free to the public and everyone is welcome to enjoy the soup, desserts, refreshments and time with friends.For more information or to volunteer, stop by the church at 22 Lafayette St., or call 570-668-4139.Tamaqua seniorsThe Tamaqua Senior Citizens met Aug. 25 at the Tamaqua YMCA with 63 members in attendance. Secretary Ruthann Feane provided the inspirational reading "Don't Quit." President Melody Weicker conducted the business session.Sandy Scott and Brenda Zeller were added to the sick list. July and August birthdays were celebrated, honoring Kathleen Valentine, Dolly Kamant, Nancy Gerber, Barbara Gallagher, Pauline Fenstermacher, Anthony Zahora and Mary Ann Laughlin.Upcoming events include: flu shots administered by rite Aid on Sept. 15; bus trip to the Dutch Way Kitchen in Myerstown on Sept. 19; trip to the Mohegan Sun in Wilkes-Barre on Oct. 17.Refreshments were served. A pizza party will be held at the Sept. 1 meeting.The group is open to anyone 55 or older. Meetings are held at 1 p.m. Thursdays at the Tamaqua YMCA, 1201 E. Broad St.Bethany ECThe Rev. Kevin Roberts will officiate at the 8 and 10:30 a.m. worship services this Sunday in Bethany Evangelical Congregational Church.
