Groups offer support at service

Support groups were out in force in Pottsville on Saturday, helping to provide comfort to those grieving and helping the regional community deal with a sudden tragic loss.

Volunteers offered help in tangible ways, such as directing traffic, assisting mourners in wheelchairs, and in the case of the American Red Cross, offering water, Gatorade, crackers and snacks."We set up the canteen for the benefit of the family and the visitors. It's the least we can do," said Red Cross volunteer Pat Daley. At 11 a.m., Daley said the Red Cross already distributed over 400 waters to those waiting in line under hot sun.Another made a reference to teamwork."We're all here for the same purpose," said Dee Burritt, Lehigh Valley, with Warriors' Watch Riders. Her husband, Mike, helped to coordinate the show of support from that group and several others."I knew today would be a heartbreaking day," said Tracy Shosh, Shoemakersville. Shosh is a member of Warrior's Watch. "We think it's important that our military knows there are people who care and have their backs."Other groups taking part were the Patriot Guard Riders of Pennsylvania, American Legion Riders, Leathernecks Nation Motorcycle Club, Christian Motorcycle Association and Nighstalkers Brotherhood."We're from all over the country," said Gerry Pawlowski, Auburn. "This is all about honoring a hero."Helping direct traffic was Douglas "Doc" Kimbell, state captain, Patriot Guard Riders, who said his group jumps to action as soon as they learn of a fallen hero."We get notified by the State Department when someone is killed in action," he said. "We come if the family gives us the OK. We stand with the family."Saturday's event was coordinated by Mike Vogt, Nescopeck, Patriot Guard Riders assistant state captain.Mourners said the overwhelming show of support was appropriate for Capt. Jason Jones."He was a great kid," said attorney Jeffrey Bowe, Tamaqua, with wife Rea.Similar sentiments were offered by J. Stuart Richards and wife Danielle, Orwigsburg neighbors of Jones' mother, Suzy."Jason was an all-Amerian, great guy."When the Jones' body leaves Dover Air Force Base, the Patriot Guard Riders will escort the hearse to Pottsville. Afterward, they will escort the body of Jones to a final resting place, reportedly to be West Point, where Jones attended the U.S. Military Academy.

DONALD R. SERFASS/TIMES NEWS Members of the Patriot Guard Riders joined forces with several other groups to put on a dramatic show of some 85 American flags, along with providing other support services at the memorial service for Capt. Jason Jones held Saturday in Pottsville.
