West End news for Aug. 5, 2020

Service held

The published calendar for Pleasant Valley Assembly of God Church, Brodheadsville, states there will be a service at 7 tonight.

On Sunday, the pre-prayer service is at 9 a.m. and the worship service is at 10 a.m.

Monday’s activities include LovingHands from 10 a.m. to noon bread pickup from 4 to 5 p.m. and the PVCO dinner from 4 to 5 p.m.

WEHA meeting

The West End Home Association, American Legion Post 927, in Gilbert, will meet for its monthly meeting tonight, beginning at 7:30 p.m.

The Legion Post itself will hold its monthly meeting at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.

Diploma pickup

According to the PV Bears website, graduates from the Class of 2020 who have not yet received their diploma may pick them up from 10 a.m. to noon on Thursday.

QOP church plans

This past Sunday, Our Lady Queen of Peace Roman Catholic Church celebrated the Sacraments of Confirmation and First Holy Communion during the 5 p.m. and 11 a.m. Masses, with both Masses livestreamed.

There will be an opportunity to receive Communion after the 11 a.m. Mass until 12:15 p.m.

That worship opportunity is planned to continue for the next three Sundays and on this Sunday, a Mass in Spanish will be celebrated in the Pavilion at 5 p.m.

Special speaker

Pleasant Valley Presbyterian Church, Brodheadsville, will welcome back the Rev. Hugh Vrablic on Sunday. His sermon will be: A Calling To Transform Us All.

The services are currently on Facebook due to church building changes and the changes in the world.

Drive-in service

Zion Lutheran, Brodheadsville, had to cancel its drive-in worship service this past Sunday due to the rain. However, circumstances allowing, it will take place at 9 a.m. this Sunday. Join in for worship on the church’s Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/zionulc/

Touch of Home

Operation: Touch of Home will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the American Legion Post home in Gilbert, under the pavilion.

Senior nutrition

The newsletter from the Monroe County Seniors office has much information in it about the Senior Farmer’s Market Nutrition Program.

The Monroe County Area Agency on Aging has been administering the program.

It offers qualifying county seniors an opportunity to receive SFMNP vouchers for $24 if the senior qualifies by being age 60 or older and meeting income guidelines: $23,606 for one person in the household or two with an income of $31,894.

WEPOSC meeting

The West End Park and Open Space Commission is slated to meet again at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 12 at the Chestnuthill Park Building in Brodheadsville.

Blood drive

Cornerstone Community Church, 388 Polk Township Road, Kresgeville, currently has several openings for the American Red Cross blood drive the church is hosting from 1 to 6 p.m. Aug. 12.

Appointments are needed. Schedule online or call 1-800-RED CROSS.

The next Miller-Keystone visit to the Western Pocono Community Library on Aug. 19.

Ice cream event

The West End Community can come to the Chestnuthill Township Park from 5 to 6 p.m. Aug. 12, for ice cream sundaes.

Drivers are asked to drive through, and under the canopy, and remain in the car.

Delaware paddling

Monroe County Conservation District’s Kettle Creek Environmental Education Center has announced Paddling the Delaware with Kettle Creek on Aug. 18.

Join Kettle Creek on an all day paddle on the scenic Delaware River, paddling 10 miles of river from Bushkill to Smithfield Beach and immerse themselves in the river environment.

This slow-paced paddle is good for beginners and experienced paddlers alike. It will have time built in to look at the river habitat, swim and just enjoy the river. Bring a boat or staff will help paddlers rent a canoe or kayak.

Water shoes, swimwear, lunch, towels, sunscreen and something to drink are all that is needed to be brought to make this trip down the river. Participants and staff will meet at the Bushkill Access on the river at 8:30 a.m. and it is anticipated the trip should be finished around 4 p.m. Canoes and kayaks are both OK on this trip.

If a participant needs to rent a boat, please let staff now and it will set it up for that person. Registration deadline is Aug. 14. If bringing a boat, there is a parking fee per vehicle that one will be responsible for at the Bushkill access. For more information, including cost, or to register, call 570-629-3061.

Helpful donations

The Monroe County Retired and Senior Volunteer Program, located at 411 Main St. #102B can use donations of: clean yarn, plastic grocery bags, cellphones with chargers, prescription eyeglasses, cotton fabrics and decorative ribbons, elastics, buttons and assorted craft items.

Those items can keep Monroe adults busy helping others.

Monroe County Habitat for Humanity accepts donations of idle cars, trucks, motorcycles. The sale of those donations then brings needed funds to Habitat to use for restoring homes in Monroe County that need repairs.

Chicken barbecue

Effort UMC has announced its chicken barbecue as taking place on Aug. 29, as a takeout event only. It will be held from 1 to 7 p.m. or until sold out.

Call the church at 570-629-1890 to place an order and arrange payment.

Pistol raffle

The American Legion Riders has announced a pistol raffle. It includes an M&P by Smith & Wesson from Dunkelberger’s, or gift card of equal value. Only 250 tickets will be sold.

The drawing will be held at 8 p.m. Oct. 2, at the American Legion, 646 Fairgrounds Road, Gilbert.

Winners need not be present to win.
