Public hearing held for wind turbine amendment

The wind turbine ordinance for Towamensing Township permits just one turbine on a property. At the May 3 supervisors' meeting there was a public hearing about an amendment which would permit two on a property.

Farmers with their many buildings requested the change said Solicitor Tom Nanovic. The turbines will be subordinate to the principal use.There were no comments and it was approved at the regular meeting to be advertised.Mike Sowers, a new resident of the township, said he shares a border with a large development. There is a drainpipe aimed at his property. He asked if the water is allowed to flow into an adjacent pond.Supervisor Guy Seifert said the supervisors do not get involved with drainage problems and that the person to see is Chris Storm of the Carbon County Conservation District.Surveyor Robert Beers said he had a client who, along with the pumping station, are the only users of Old Forest Street, 90 percent of which is in Penn Forest Township. He wants the road vacated to prevent vandalism. Two drainpipes were stolen from under the road.Beers said Penn Forest has no problem with it and will vote on it at its next meeting. His client owns both sides of the roadbed. Towamensing always maintained the entire road.Fire Chief Wayne Knirnschild asked about access to the pumping station. Beers said it would have the right to use the road.Supervisor Penny Kleintop said the township needs to maintain a certain mileage of dirt roads to retain its second-class township status. Secretary Lora Nothstein will check the mileage.The Towamensing Township Historical Commission went on a field trip April 24 to visit the site of the Jack Muffley Hotel at Wild Creek. It required a half-mile walk to the site.Kleintop said her father told stories of the hotel that had a concrete trough running through the back with trout in it. The trough is still there. Because of the trout the area was called the hatchery. There were concrete pillars on both sides.Viola Bruch met the group and said her father grew up there. His cousin was caretaker. They took beagles to train."My grandmother passed away on the front porch while she was peeling potatoes," said Bruch.The hotel straddles the Carbon-Monroe county line.A request for bids will be advertised for diesel fuel and heating oil.Stone and emulsion bids were opened. A special meeting will be held Wednesday, 9:30 a.m., to go over bids after the roadmaster reviews them and Nothstein puts them in order on a spreadsheet.It was announced that permits for the new ball field have been received. The trees are down and storm water control is in place.Supervisor Tom Newman said a School Crisis Emergency Response Exercise will be held at Jim Thorpe School, May 12, 9 a.m. to noon. There will be a walk-through planning exercise on Friday, 2 p.m., at the high school.Kleintop attended a PPL luncheon where the company asked municipalities for help with clear-cutting under power lines. Applicants with power lines on their plans should contact PPL.The next meeting of the rewriting of the zoning regulations will be held at Lower Towamensing Township, June 25, 7 p.m. "We were approved for a (zoning rewrite) grant," said Kleintop.Salvador Lizzio was sworn in as a fire policeman.Mary Ann Lewellyn turned in her resignation as a township auditor.
