The Eldred Township Planning Commission has made recommendations to the board of supervisors requesting that the township consider making changes to a few permitted uses in the township.

During Wednesday evening's meeting supervisor Gary Hoffman made motions to change water extraction and water extraction facilities prohibited uses in the township.Over the past year the township dealt with the possibility of Nestle Waters NA moving into town to withdraw 200,000 gallons of water a day under a private lease with a local land owner. The Nestle application for a special exception was made possible by anamendment to the township's zoning ordinance which moved water extraction as a permitted use from the commercial to the light industrial zone.In March the township changed the ordinance back. The new revision would make water extraction prohibited throughout the township.In May Nestle withdrew its application.A second motion was made to prohibit racetracks in the township. Under the current zoning ordinance, a racetrack is a permitted use. The new ordinance would make it a regional use under the regional zoning, meaning that it would have to be permitted somewhere within theChestnuthill, Jackson, Eldred, Ross and Polk townships regional planning area."I don't think you are giving this enough thought," said Doug Borger. "A racetrack could bring in about 30 full-time and 30 part-time jobs, amusement tax revenue and people to spend money here."Borger, who owns Excel Chassis, where he builds and designs cars for dirt tracks, said he believes that cars can be designed to keep the noise to a minimum and that the positives outweigh the negatives in this instance.Wednesday's motions will allow the township solicitor to draft the amendments which will be advertised and there will be a public meeting conducted to discuss the matter and give residents a chance to express their concerns and support of the measures.Also during the meeting, resident Donna Deihl requested that the township look further into the changes that allowed Nestle to come to Eldred Township.Deihl requested that the supervisors consider sending the matter to the attorney general for investigation.Hoffman made a motion to have township solicitor Michael Gaul look at what the residents had in the way of evidence to determine who the township would file the matter with.Deihl also noted that the Concerned Citizens of Eldred would be holding what they hoped would be their last fundraiser this coming Saturday evening. Raymond the Amish Comic will be at the Kunkletown Fire House that evening followed by a night of music and dancing. Tickets will be available at the door and the money raised will go toward paying off the legal bills left over from the fight against Nestle.
