She only sold methamphetamine once, because she was pregnant and unemployed and wanted to buy her son a go-kart for his birthday, Amy J. Hawk told Carbon County President Judge Roger N. Nanovic Thursday.

Hawk, 42, of Weissport, pleaded guilty to selling the drug to a confidential informant on July 10. She was charged by state police at Hazleton.Nanovic, clearly skeptical of her contention, accepted her plea and sentenced her to six to 18 months in jail, followed by one year on probation.He also ordered Hawk to obtain a drug and alcohol evaluation and comply with any recommendations, and to submit to random urine screens. He gave her credit for the 49 days she's already served.He will allow Hawk to serve the time from Thursday to Sunday evenings so she can help care for her children and look for another job.The plea means her 21-year career as a certified nurse assistant will end, she said.Assistant District Attorney Brian B. Gazo did not object to the arrangement.Hawk's public defender, Matthew J. Motola, said his client does not use drugs, and regrets her decision to make the sale."Someone gave me the opportunity to make some money," she said."You sold (methamphetamine) to buy a birthday present for your son?" Nanovic asked.Hawk refused to tell Nanovic who supplied the meth."I'd rather not reveal that," she replied when he asked.Nanovic questioned her as to just how the informant could have known she would be selling the drug only on that one day.Hawk said the person who gave her the meth must have told others.The baby she was carrying is now 8 weeks old, and being cared for by her fiance, who is also caring for her 5-year-old and her 10-year-old.
