Walnutport debates where alcohol should be permitted

The issue of where alcohol should be permitted in Walnutport persists.

Borough council revisited the matter on Thursday after it originally came to light at last month’s meeting.

At that meeting, the question was asked if there would be police coverage for the second annual Northern Lehigh Recreation Authority’s Everything Outdoors Food Truck Festival held last month.

Jeanne Boehrer, president of the Walnutport Canal Association, questioned how they were able to have alcohol permitted for their event when the canal association was told alcohol was not permitted.

Boehrer said the canal association previously lost four to five rentals at its pavilion this year because it wasn’t allowed to have alcohol at the pavilion.

Councilwoman Patrice Hunsicker said at that time that Mayor Wayne Weidner — in his capacity — had made an exception for alcohol to be sold at the food truck festival.

Hunsicker said the point of having alcohol at the food truck festival was to add to the revenue for the recreation authority.

The festival was held July 27 in the borough park on Lincoln Avenue, and borough officials touted it as a huge success.

On Thursday, borough secretary Annette Lacko said that the insurance company advised against alcohol being permitted.

Boehrer then questioned what happens in the event someone asks for an exception.

Weidner said the exception could be if there’s a special event, and they are able to secure a permit on that day.

“Maybe if you guys get your own permit every time you do it, then I would say ‘yeah’,” Weidner said. “Then the borough is not liable; they’re liable.”

Weidner said he has no problem with the idea as long as the insurance liability doesn’t fall on the borough.

“If we can do it that way and put the liability off us and put the liability on their insurance carrier,” he said. “I just don’t want the borough to be (liable).”
