Summit Hill Fishing Association disbands
The Summit Hill Fishing Association, which for years held fishing derbies for youth and adults, has officially disbanded.
On Saturday, in a brief gathering at the Italian Club in Summit Hill, the association donated all its remaining funds to two organizations which serve the youths of the community.Bill Mansberry, one of two of the last remaining founders of the club, presented checks totaling $4,764.09 each to the Summit Hill Recreation Commission and the Anthracite Little League Baseball Association.Neither organization has specific plans for the money. Representatives of both groups made a general statement saying, "It will come in handy."The Summit Hill Fishing Association was formed in the late 1970s, Mansberry said.He said besides himself, the only remaining founding member is Richie Colancecco. A third member of the club is Paul Yuricheck.Mansberry said it was a suggestion of Yuricheck to give the remaining funds to organizations for the benefit of the town's youth."We started our club for the kids," Mansberry said. "We had fishing derbies for children and adults as well as other events. We bought land in West Penn Township."That land has since been sold.The Recreation Commission was represented by its president, Jodi McAndrew.Representing the Anthracite Little League Association were Roobhenn Smith, president; Brian Binder, vice president; Dianna Binder, treasurer, and Jerry Snyder and Matthew Taras, board members.The Recreation Commission has applied for a state grant for funds to improve the borough's playgrounds.The Anthracite Little League Association sponsors tee ball and baseball teams up to age 12 in Summit Hill, Nesquehoning, Lansford, Jim Thorpe, Towamensing Township, Franklin Township and Weatherly in the spring and fall. It is also a sponsor of two traveling baseball teams in the fall.
