A home care worker admitted in Carbon County court on Monday she stole jewelry from her elderly client.
Regina M. Pera, 48, of Albrightsville, pleaded guilty before Judge Steven R. Serfass to one count of theft, as a misdemeanor one.She admitted stealing jewelry, valued at more than $23,000, from her elderly client, Marguerite Green, of 184 Unionville Road, in Penn Forest Township, over a period of time in May and June 2013.The client has since passed away.Herbert Green, the client's husband, said he had a surveillance camera set up in the bedroom after the family noticed jewelry was missing from the home.He said it showed Pera entering the bedroom and taking jewelry. State police were then notified.Defense attorney Robert Sauman said his client has no prior record and is remorseful for what she did. She admitted what she did was horrible.Pera said she pawned the jewelry for money because of "family problems."Herbert Green told Serfass that Pera came into his home to help his ailing wife and took advantage of the elderly. His wife was 84 at the time, Green said. He said the video caught Pera entering the bedroom three separate times in one day to take jewelry.Another family member called Pera a '"predator" of the elderly. One condition of the plea agreement was that Pera had to pay $10,000 of the restitution at the time of sentencing, which Sauman said he was ready to do as of Tuesday.Serfass placed her on probation for 24 months and ordered her to pay an additional $13,855 in restitution; court costs, which average about $1,000; a $50 per month supervision fee, and render 100 hours of community service.
