A dispute over finances between Walker Township officials and New England Fire Co. No. 1 will be discussed at a special meeting next month.

Fire company member Charles Felty told the board on Thursday that he was there to discuss financial matters between the board and the fire company.Throughout their discussion, the board and Felty disagreed on several occasions as to how much the fire company is actually owed.After more dialogue, the board said it would be willing to meet with the fire company to discuss the matter.At that, the board agreed to hold the special meeting at 10 a.m. Oct. 15, at the township municipal building.Supervisors Chairman Bill McMullen told Felty the township will be discussing its budget for 2017, and asked him to provide one from the fire department.Felty previously approached the board in May, at which time he asked the board to raise their fire tax contribution to the fire company to 2 mills.He said at that time the fire company faced increased expenses, such as workers' compensation, as well as a lack of support by township residents toward fire company events.Supervisor Craig Wagner said at that time the fire tax is currently 0.75 mills and that raising the fire tax to 2 mills would require a substantial increase from the township.Felty at that time asked why only one-third of the fire company's expenses are being paid by the fire tax.
