Schuylkill County is gearing up for the Nov. 8 general election.

Commissioners on Wednesday approved election bureau chief Frannie Brennan's recommendations to hire people to test and program voting machines, be on hand to troubleshoot, and to compute and canvass returns.The hires are 12 rovers, to be paid $10 an hour plus 54 cents per mile. They'll travel on Election Day to assigned polling sites or where needed, starting Oct. 10 or sooner to ensure logistics/accuracy and to prepare for the election.The rovers are Mike Botto, Annmarie Groody, Kathy Case, Carol Leashefski, Ron Coleman, Joe Matz, Carol Cooney-Syzdek, Jean Quirk, Tony Downey, Janet Terefencko, Bob Fallan and Daniel Wachter.The 10 machine delivery drivers are Thomas Kurtek, to be paid $140; Jason Frantz and William Klinger, to be paid $160 each; Kenneth Eichenberg, to be paid $170; Joe Zurat, to be paid $200; Walter Leashefski, Diane Robbins, Denise Wallace and Christine Wartman, to be paid $210 each; and Diane Tobin, to be paid $220.The six computing board members will be paid $70 a day, beginning at 9 a.m. Nov. 14, to begin the computation and canvassing of the returns.They are Joann Myers, Rose Kern, Joann Dower, Sharon Chiao, James P. Klock and Thomas O'Neill.Brennan also reminded people of upcoming deadlines.Oct. 11 is the last day to register before the November election, Nov. 1 is the last day to apply for a civilian absentee ballot, and Nov. 4 is the last day for the county Board of Elections to receive completed civilian absentee ballots.
