HS baseball tourney in the works

High school baseball could be back in early August.

Reports have surfaced that teams from the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference and the Colonial League would combine to participate in a Lehigh Valley tournament.

A 32-team event is being planned to take place over a four-day period. All teams from the EPC, except Dieruff, would join with the entire Colonial League, minus Northern Lehigh, to compete in the tourney.

Three teams - Quakertown, Pennridge and Upper Perk - have also agreed to play to help fill the field.

Teams would be divided into eight pools (four teams in each pool) and will play three games within their pool. The top two teams in each pool would advance to the round of 16.

After that, there would be single elimination rounds, with the Sweet 16 and Elite 8 being held on one day, and the semifinals and finals to take place on another day.

Preliminary reports have Palmerton in Pool E with Whitehall, Allen and Parkland.

Northwestern would be in Pool H, along with Emmaus, Salisbury and Saucon Valley.

Pleasant Valley would find itself in Pool G with fellow Monroe County schools East Stroudsburg North, East Stroudsburg South and Stroudsburg.

Pool play would take place on Aug. 3 and 5. The Sweet 16 and Elite 8 is scheduled for Aug. 7, with the semis and finals on Aug. 9.

Those in charge - including Notre Dame’s Mike Bedics and Liberty’s Andy Pitsilos - are hopeful to use area high school and college fields to host the games.

More information is expected in the future.
