A Coaldale man faces charges of possessing child pornography and trying to get a minor to perform sexual acts, according to the U.S. Attorney's office.

Robert Rang, 25, appeared Monday before U.S. Magistrate Judge Karoline Mehalchick in Wilkes-Barre and was ordered to remain in prison pending a Jan. 6 detention hearing.According to the complaint, Rang used a facility of interstate commerce during September and October to attempt to “persuade and induce a minor to engage in illegal sexual activities.”The complaint also alleges that Rang received and possessed child pornography from September to Dec. 29, 2014.If convicted, Rang faces between 10 years and life in prison on the enticement charge, between 5 and 20 years on the charge of receiving child pornography, and a maximum sentence of 10 years for possessing child pornography.The investigation is being conducted in cooperation with the U.S. Attorney's Office and the United States Postal Inspection Service in Massachusetts.The case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in May 2006 by the Department of Justice to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse.Assistant U.S. Attorney Francis P. Sempa is handling the prosecution.Rang is a registered sex offender, having been convicted of corruption of minors in 2011.
