Helen Torok is seeking re-election to Lehighton Borough Council.

Tork and her husband Tibor are the parents of three children: son, Derek Tibor Torok of Easton and daughter, Marika Torok-Briggs of Racine, Wisconsin. Her oldest daughter, Andrea Lynette Foster, died 5 years ago from diabetes complications. She has eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.Torok developed professional solutions for recovering corporate information systems that were destroyed in two bombings before Sept. 11.She chaired the art gala and talent show for the 150th Lehighton Sesquicentennial Celebration. Her focus since she was elected in 2013 has been tackling blight. New businesses are beginning to alter First Street, and the park has been renovated.She serves as chairman at the Lehighton Power and Light committee, vice chairman of the Central Carbon Municipal Authority, and co-chairman of the sewer committee. She also serves on the Carbon County Action Committee for Human Services, which addresses low-income homelessness or near eviction.Torok is a local board member of the Emergency Food and Shelter Program, which distributes national funds to Family Promise of Carbon County and Shepherd House food pantries. She is a local representation for the Jewish synagogue at the Temple Israel of Lehighton, where she is a member.She serves as a Carbon County Fair volunteer director, where she is a fundraiser, photographer and talent show producer collectively for 18 years.Other community activities included serving on the Penn State Extension Board, 4-H Committees and preparing for 100-year Penn State Extension anniversary this summer. She presented Minsi Trails Career Day seminars, during the special Civil War weekend at Eckley Miners Village and a musical production of "Slave Songs, History and Family stories" for several years at the American Cancer Society telethon.She was a charter president for the Jim Thorpe Lioness Club and outreach secretary for the Carbon County Democrats for Progress and the Lehighton Area Democratic Club, where she is also an outreach secretary and Facebook administrator.Torok has entertained Wounded Warriors at the Wilkes-Barre veterans facility and donated her talent for many fundraisers locally with bands and fellow entertainers to raise disaster relief funds.
