Man sentenced in rape of child, 5

A Tamaqua man has admitted in Schuylkill County court that he raped a 5-year-old child, and took inappropriate photographs of another, even younger, child in 2001.

Robert L. Raeder, 46, will serve 10-20 years in state prison for his crimes.Judge John E. Domalakes sentenced Raeder on April 2 on charges of rape of a person under age 13; aggravated indecent assault, incest and two counts of corruption of minors. He will serve five to 10 years on the rape charge; three to six years on the aggravated indecent assault charge; and six months to a year on each of the corruption charges.Prosecutors dropped charges of unlawful contact with a minor, two counts of indecent assault, and indecent exposure in the plea negotiation.Domalakes described Raeder, who is serving a federal prison sentence on child pornography charges, as a sexually violent predator, and also sentenced him to register as such under Megan's law for the rest of his life.Because Raeder is in federal prison, the plea hearing and sentencing were held via videoconference.Raeder was sentenced on Sept. 12, 2013, to 121 months in federal prison for the child pornography charges.Raeder said he committed the crimes in 2001. They came to light when a Walker Township road cleanup crew found 53 Polaroid pictures of the child and the assault. On Oct. 23, 2012, a request for identification was given to area media outlets. Two days later the biological parents of a girl in the photos contacted troopers stating one of the girls in the photos appeared to be their daughter. The parents said the girl was 3-5 years of age at the time of the photos.Troopers then learned that during the summer of 2001 Raeder was a baby sitter for the girl while her mother was at work, along with his own children.
