Lansford police have charged an East Stroudsburg man with raping a child.

Robert Coutts, 46, of Franklin Road, was charged with rape of a person under age 13, statutory sexual assault of a person under age 16, indecent assault of a person under the age of 13 and indecent exposure.He was arraigned Monday before District Judge Casimir Kosciolek of Lansford and released on $50,000 unsecured bail. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for 3 p.m. April 23.According to an affidavit of probable cause filed by Detective Jack Soberick, here's what happened:Soberick was assigned to investigate a report of a sexual assault of a juvenile that happened during 2004 through 2008.The girl, who is now 11, told family members she was assaulted while living in Lansford while she was 4 to 6 years old. The family contacted law enforcement agencies, and the investigation was launched.She began to receive counseling and support.The girl disclosed details of the assaults while undergoing a physical examination and interview at the Child Advocacy Center in Scranton.She said that Coutts took her away from the other children who lived in the house and sexually assaulted her. He assaulted her at any time he could get her alone, she said. She described the assaults, and "it was clear that the assaults were in fact rapes of this victim," Soberick wrote.The girl told staff at the Child Advocacy Center that when Coutts used his body part, it was very uncomfortable. Coutts did not stop no matter how hard she cried.Coutts told her he did what he did because he loved her. But he also threatened to hit her if she told anyone.It was only after Coutts had no control over her that she felt safe enough to tell.Coutts was interviewed after being given his Miranda rights verbally and in writing. Coutts adamantly denied ever having been alone with the girl and said he would never consider any sexual contact with her.During the last interview, conducted with the assistance of Trooper Alan Pietkiewicz on Wednesday, Feb. 12, Coutts admitted it was possible that he was alone with the girl on occasion. He also admitted it was possible that she had seen him naked. He continued to deny any sexual contact.
