New Jersey man arrested in Lansford

Jamie Sabater, 24, of 316 Fulton Ave., Jersey City, New Jersey, faces charges from an incident which took place on June 13 at 41 W. Ridge St., Lansford at 4:21 p.m. A charge of receiving stolen property was filed by Officer Jason Helmer. He was arraigned before District Judge Homanko of Weatherly and committed to prison.

According to an affidavit of probable cause, Helmer was in his patrol car, traveling east on West Ridge Street when he saw two Hispanic men get out of a silver Mercedes-Benz with a New Jersey license plate, parked in front of 41 W. Ridge.They walked away, and he saw that they went between two buildings in the 100 block of West Ridge. The officer believed their behavior was suspicious, and the area is known for drug activity. He checked the license and discovered the Mercedes had been reported stolen in New Jersey.Helmer immediately called for assistance to search the area. Officer Brian Horos saw the men in front of the Panther Valley Mini Mall on West Patterson Street. Both men were arrested inside the mall. They were identified as Anthony Hernandez and Sabater, who had been driving the car. Sabater had in his wallet a driver's license belonging to the car's owner, Carlos A. Dortrait. Both men were taken to the police station and read their Miranda rights. The car was impounded.Hernandez gave police a written statement saying that Sabater had come to Lansford with the Mercedes, and told Hernandez it was his car. Hernandez said they had gotten out of the car near the liquor store on West Ridge Street.Sabater would not cooperate, and denied having any knowledge that the car was stolen. He offered no explanation for having Dortrait's license in his wallet.
