PPL Electric was given the go-ahead Monday to convert its streetlights to LED bulbs.
The LED lights are considered more energy efficient, which could reap a substantial savings to the borough, said council President Michael Kokinda.It wasn't stated when the new lights will be installed.The borough will have to pay $200 to $300 for two of the units because PPL will only pay for those that are over 10 years old.Borough treasurer Kira Steber said two units are under 2 years old.Kokinda said he doesn't mind the expenditure because "it will save us at least $300 a week."PPL owns the streetlightsin the borough and charges the town a monthly fee per fixture. The borough paid PPL $6,452.30 for electric. Of that amount, $4,557.96 was for street lighting.Other matters• Councilman John O'Gurek said some street signs and stop signs are leaning. He said he wants the borough workforce to make repairs.• Jodi McAndrew, chairwoman of the Recreation Commission, said weekly exercise sessions for all ages are being held at 6:30 p.m. at the Community Center. A $5 donation is divided between the Recreation Commission and the Lansford Pool Committee.• Council agreed to apply for two government grants - a $250,000 grant for improvements to Ginder Field and a $13,700 grant to be applied to the cost of a new police cruiser.• Councilman Billy O'Gurek said the Summit Hill Historical Society purchased paint and materials for improving the Ludlow Park Gazebo.He said the painting and other work was done by volunteers William O'Gurek; Kira, Kevin and Kacy Steber; Bill and Sharon Chapman; and Daniel York.• The Church of the Rock was granted permission to use Ginder Field from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on July 22 and Aug. 26 for a kickball game.
