Lehighton plans to apply for a pair of grants to benefit both its fire department and police department.

That's after borough council on Monday unanimously approved two resolutions for submission of a Local Share Account Monroe County grant through the Department of Community and Economic Development.The grants the borough applied for would go toward the purchase of a pickup ($74,069) for the fire department, and for upgraded technology ($76,372) for the police department, such as the purchase and installation of surveillance equipment for all borough-owned property and parks, body cameras and new radios for the police officers, as well as an in-car camera system for one police vehicle."The Borough of Lehighton has accelerated our drive in recent years to provide the most welcoming, quality environment for our residents and visitors," said borough manager Nicole Beckett."As we continue to offer diverse recreational opportunities, revitalize our downtown and enhance our community services, it is imperative that we have the proper foundation to monitor our activities, protect our assets, and assure our residents of their safety and security."Also on Monday, council agreed to purchase and finance a 2017 Ford F-250 for the borough's public works department.It will be purchased from Kovatch Ford at a cost of $38,759, and be leased for a three-year term starting in 2017.Other actionIn other business, council approved:• The final plans for the Blakeslee Commons, upon final approval from the borough engineer.• The development agreement with Lehighton Development LP with revisions upon final approval of the borough solicitor and borough engineer.• The 2016 Minimum Municipal Obligation Worksheet for the Police Pension Fund, which represents a $7,938 increase, andthe Non-Uniform Pension Plan, which calls for a $32,533 increase.• Agreed to adopt an ordinance to create a seven-member recreation board, and to advertise for letters of interest for the board.• The Lehighton Touchdown Club's request to hold a parade/bonfire on Oct. 27.• Announced trick-or-treat will be held in the borough from 6-8 p.m. Oct. 26.
