A teenager from Monroe County has been accused of threatening a school shooting so that he would miss his English class.
Authorities did not identify the 16-year-old suspect, a student at East Stroudsburg High School South, because he is being charged as a juvenile.
The alleged threats occurred on Monday morning, November 7.
The student first posted anonymous threats on a phone application called "After School," but they were flagged and did not go out to students, according to a press release the Monroe County District Attorney's office.
He subsequently took screen shots of the threats and text messaged them directly to other students, who reported the sender to administrators and school police.
The messages stated, "I'm shooting up 5th lunch" and "I'm shooting up the school tomorrow f*** everybody", according to the press release.
Police became aware of the threat after students reported that the suspect text messaged them screenshots of the posts on the "After School" app.
Officers responded to the school and took the student into custody. He admitted sending the messages and said he did it because he hoped to get out of his English class.
Police also notified the developers of the application, who said that their internal content filter had prevented the message from being sent out to other students.
The juvenile suspect has been charged with several counts of Terroristic Threats and Criminal Use of a Communication Facility, all felonies, as well as False Alarms to Agencies of Public Safety and False Reports to Law Enforcement, both misdemeanors. He was arrested and placed in a secure juvenile detention facility pending the outcome of a juvenile court hearing.
