Monroe county reassessment begins

On June 1 the Monroe County Commissioners voted in favor ofcalling for a countywide real property tax reassessment. The last reassessment was completed in 1989.

According to information provided by the county, the need for a reassessment is based on a number of factors which normally occur between assessment periods.Market values change, this may be due to appreciation, decline, structural modifications, rezoning and land divisions. The reassessment is intended to restore equity within the county. The county hired the firm of Tyler Technologies to handle the reassessment. One of the deciding factors was that Tyler will be using its own proprietary software. Under the $6,419,810 contract, the county has a five-year agreement for use of the software. The project is currently underway with both street-level evaluations and data collection taking place in parts of the county."We understand that this is a huge undertaking," said Chairman John Moyer. "But two-thirds of the residents are paying based on a wrong assessment of their property."Moyer said that the re-evaluations and appraisals will take the better part of three years and that he hoped it would be complete in time for the 2019 tax bills to be issued. The resolution passed in June states that it is the responsibility of the Board of Assessment Revision to establish the fair market value of all real estate parcels in Monroe County. The countywide assessment is designed to achieve fair and equitable distribution of the real estate tax burden among all Monroe County property owners.
