Pennsylvania State Police released the results of their stepped-up efforts to patrol the roadways over the four-day Christmas holiday.

The tallies covered arrests and citations from Dec. 23 to Dec. 26.The PSP reported 314 arrests for DUI, a 44 percent increase from 2015's holiday season.Part of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" enforcement campaign, troopers kept their eyes peeled for impaired drivers with DUI checkpoints and patrols.State police also investigated 661 crashes, a slight increase over last year's total.Fifty of the incidents involved alcohol, 201 people were injured, and two were killed.The fatal crash was not alcohol related.Troop N, covering Carbon and Monroe counties, saw 21 DUI arrests, 53 crashes, no fatalities, 11 injuries, and five alcohol-related crashes.Troop L, covering Schuylkill county, saw seven DUI arrests, 59 crashes, no fatalities, 13 injuries, and two alcohol-related crashes.Aside from DUI enforcement, troopers doled out 2,884 speeding tickets, 218 seat belt citations, and 74 child safety seat citations.Enforcement data shows that all indicated figures are up from last year's totals, aside from seat belt citations, which dropped significantly.Troop N had 125 speeding tickets, 10 seat belt citations, and 11 child safety seat citations.Troop L dealt out 90 speeding tickets, nine seat belt citations, and two child safety seat violations.These figures only reflect citations, arrests and investigations handled by the PA State Police, and not local law enforcement.The state police are encouraging those who plan to celebrate New Year's Eve to avoid driving if they choose to drink, and to use the SafeRide app instead.The app, developed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, allows the user to easily contact a taxi or friend to take them home when they've had too much to drink.
