Trash recycling is coming to Weissport.

On the recommendation of its new trash collector, Weissport's borough council agreed to allow commingled recycling on a trial basis.The recycling will occur at no additional cost to the borough.Two recycling dumpsters will be placed at the lower end of White Street.Weissport awarded a garbage collecting contract to County Waste and Recycling, which is based in Clifton Park, New York, but has some operations in Monroe County.On a related note, regular trash collection in the town will occur every Thursday starting this week. It had been picked up by the previous waste hauler on Wednesdays.Jerry Potts, a representative of County Waste, said he hopes to have the recycling bins placed by a field at White Street in about a week.Residents will be permitted to place corrugated cardboard, newspapers and containers made of metal, glass and plastic in the bins.Councilman Greg May said he is concerned people will toss garbage other than recyclables in the bins.Council member Brenda Leiby suggested that the borough try recycling on a trial basis.Recycling was approved by a 3-1 vote. In favor were Leiby, vice president Arland Moyer and Linda Schoenberger. May was opposed.Council President Gene Kershner was absent.Potts said his firm would empty the recycling containers on a regular basis."Kidder Township does it and it works perfect," he said.Leiby suggested starting with two bins, and if they work out, more could be added. She said, "If it proves to be a mess, then we'll do away with it."Potts said coming to the meeting, he saw that some residents had old TVs on the curb. He said electronics are not allowed to be discarded with regular trash.In other business• The council said it is still seeking a new solicitor. It said its former solicitor, attorney Michael Greek, has resigned but agreed to assist the borough until a new solicitor is hired.Moyer suggested that Greek be contacted and asked for recommendations on who might possibly take his place.Moyer also said Greek is working on some unfinished business including drawing up a resolution to allow the tax collector to impose a fee for mortgage company services.• A letter was received from Attorney Greek stating he filed a writ of revival in the Carbon County Courthouse regarding Kermit Strohl and Russel/Wendy Smith. The council said the writs were for unpaid garbage bills.
