Effort man charged in homicide

An Effort man faces charges of criminal homicide, abuse of a corpse and tampering with evidence after a body was found Tuesday at a residence he rented in Chestnuthill Township.

Kyle Brant Kresge, 46, had a spent small caliber shell casing in the left cargo pocket of his pants, police said in an affidavit of probable cause.State police at Fern Ridge responded to the 1200 block of Glenwood Road after a 911 call during which a female told dispatchers, "he's dead," and hung up the phone.Outside the residence, they found Lawrence Elmer Purcell Jr. covered with a tarp and other debris.Purcell had a gunshot wound in the upper chest and injuries to the face.He was pronounced dead at Pocono Medical Center just before 1:30 p.m.Police said there were signs of a struggle in the living room including items knocked over and a two-liter bottle of soda sprayed throughout the room. They also saw a possible bullet hole in the ceiling."There were transfer stains consistent with moving the body from the living room through the kitchen to a mud room and then outside," police wrote in the affidavit. An eye witness told police he saw Kresge yelling at Purcell to leave before Kresge pulled out a handgun and fire a shot. When the witness tried to leave the scene, police said, Kresge told the person to take Purcell with him.Brant is being held in Monroe County Prison without bail.A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Feb. 24 at 10 a.m.
