Lehighton will revisit potential improvements to its annex building at a later date.
After some discussion, borough council on Monday agreed to table any action on the masonry work to the building, according to borough manager Nicole Beckett.Beckett said the masonry and facade are in need of repair, and that work needs to be completed due to water leakage, insurance requirement and structural safety."We had received notification from our insurance company that the work must be completed in order to continue insuring the building," Beckett said."We had received an estimate from Spotts Brothers in February 2014 totaling $174,000 of work, which included new mortar joints, repointing, pressure washing, water repellant install and recaulk perimeter of entrances and windows."Beckett said Spotts Brothers completed the masonry work at Engine Company #2 along with the Carbon County Courthouse."We have received a template for the specifications of work at the annex," she said. "Prior to moving forward with the draft, we need to discuss the financing of the project."The loan for the annex will be paid off in 2016, Beckett said."We can extend the loan from the sewer funds in order to pay for the masonry work," she said."This is a policy decision of council. If council is prepared to extend the annex loan, you will need to authorize the preparation and advertisement of the project specifications."Also on Monday, council agreed to advertise Stedman Avenue, as well as base repairs to Seventh Street, for bid as part of its 2014 Street Paving Project. The completion of the work depends on the bids, Beckett said.
