PennDOT will shut down a three-mile section of Interstate 80 west in Carbon County for several hours Friday morning to clean up a recent wreck.
Starting at 9 a.m., crews will shut down I-80 westbound between Exit 277 (Lake Harmony) and Exit 274 (Hickory Run) for the cleanup. Eastbound lanes will not be affected.
The operation is expected to take about seven hours.
The shutdown will allow crews to clean up an oversized load which broke loose from the vehicle carrying it during a crash Wednesday afternoon.
According to state police at Fern Ridge, the cleanup will involve a heavy duty crane, which requires them to close the highway.
Crews will actually begin setting up for the detour at 8 a.m. Starting at 9 a.m., westbound traffic will be required to exit the highway at the Lake Harmony exit, then take Route 940 west to Route 534. Traffic will be allowed back on the highway at the Hickory Run exit.
State police said that the load broke free during a crash that occurred around 3:30 p.m. at mile marker 275.2. A tractor trailer reportedly jackknifed while rounding a right-hand curve. No one was injured in the crash, however both lanes of I-80 west were blocked.
The driver, 48-year-old Kelvin T. Jones of Hattiesburg, Mississippi, was cited for failing to drive at a safe speed.
