Lehigh County teen admits to assault at forestry camp

A Lehigh County teen admitted in Carbon County court on Friday to an assault incident at a state forestry camp for juvenile offenders.

Austin Payne Gomez, 18, of Whitehall, pleaded before Judge Joseph J. Matika to one count of aggravated assault for an incident on Jan. 1 at the forestry camp in Kidder Township.According to state police at Fern Ridge, Gomez was among a group of juveniles at the camp that caused a disturbance when they were told that they would not be allowed to "ring in the New Year" because another client at the camp had caused a problem.During the course of the disturbance which involved several caseworkers of the camp and the clients, Gomez was charged with assaulting Brad Williams in a bathroom area. It was reported that Williams suffered head and other injuries and still has not returned to work.Matika questioned the plea agreement since the police report indicated that Gomez had assaulted three caseworkers at the facility but was pleading only to the one involving Williams. His questioning came after a staff member appeared before the court to speak on behalf of Williams. She said she witnessed the altercation. She also claimed that Williams may never return to work for the injuries he sustained.Assistant District Attorney Seth Miller, who negotiated the plea with defense counsel Glenn M. Goodge, said the assault count included the three victims. Goodge took exception to that saying the agreement only involved Williams.Matika deferred sentencing and ordered the adult probation office to prepare a presentence investigation report. He also told Miller and Goodge to meet concerning the plea agreement and what it actually involves.
